Okinawa Living Magazine
Okinawa Living Magazine is published by Marine Corps Community Services Okinawa and serves military service members stationed in Japan. With an editorial philosophy of educating, informing, and entertaining, Okinawa Living Magazine features articles on the local culture as well as information on monthly MCCS programs and services. 20,000 copies are circulated across 8 military installations across the island, with a few copies going to mainland Japan and the United States.
Duties & Responsibilities
As the Art Director of Okinawa Living I work with seven graphic designers, one photographer, four editors, four account executives, and a sales and sponsorship team of six to complete this publication monthly. In this position my duties include the following:
- Work closely with Managing Editors to develop an editorial schedule.
- Coordinate with Account Executives in developing timelines for all advertising.
- Create print ads for clients that purchase space in the publication.
- Create page layouts in Macromedia Freehand and Adobe InDesign.
- Oversee the look of the publication and work with Graphic Designers to complete specific portions of the publication.
- Coordinate contract Photographers and worked closely with them to ensure artworking of images stayed consistent with the visual theme of the publication.
- License images to illustrate various portions of the publication.
- Serve as contributing photographer.

Davey Awards
The Davey Awards may be for smaller organizations, but the judges have big reputations. The Davey is sanctioned and judged by the International Academy of the Visual Arts, an invitation-only body consisting of top-tier professionals from a "Who's Who" of acclaimed media, advertising, and marketing firms. IAVA members include executives from organizations such as Condè Nast, Coach, Disney, The Ellen Degeneres Show, Estee Lauder, HBO, Keller Crescent, Monster.com, MTV, Polo Ralph Lauren, Sotheby's Institute of Art, Tribal DDB, Victoria's Secret, Wired, Yahoo! and many more.
